How to Connect and Use the Klaviyo Integration
Integrating Inflektion with Klaviyo allows you to automatically sync your affiliate data directly into your email marketing platform. By syncing this data, you can seamlessly engage with your affiliates, build automated email flows, and create dynamic segments based on their specific program attributes (such as affiliate type, status, or discount codes).
Here is a step-by-step guide on how to configure the integration and start segmenting your affiliates in Klaviyo.
Generating Your Klaviyo API Key
To connect the two platforms, you will first need to create a custom Private API Key in your Klaviyo account.
- Log in to your Klaviyo dashboard.
- Click on your profile name in the bottom left corner and navigate to Settings.
- In the Settings menu, click on the API Keys tab.
- Under the "Private API Keys" section, click the Create Private API Key button.
- Provide a clear Private API Key Name, such as "Inflektion Integration".
- Select the Custom Key option to manually customize the level of access.
- Scroll through the API Scopes and set the following three permissions to Full Access:
- Lists
- Profiles
- Subscriptions
- Click Create in the top right corner.
- Klaviyo will generate your private key. Click the copy icon to copy the Private Key to your clipboard. (Note: Keep this key secure and do not share it publicly.)
Connecting the Integration in Inflektion
Now that you have your Klaviyo API Key, you need to plug it into Inflektion.
- Log in to your Inflektion dashboard.
- Navigate to Admin on the left-hand menu, then select the Integrations tab at the top.
- Locate the Klaviyo integration block.
- Paste the Private API Key you just copied into the Klaviyo Private API Key field.
- Click Save Credentials.
- Once successfully validated, the status will change to Connected.
At this point your affiliates will automatically be synced into a new Klaviyo list called "Inflektion Affiliates".
Moving forward, Inflektion will automatically update this information in real-time as changes happen (e.g., if an affiliate joins or gets removed, has their vanity URL changed, etc.),
If the data gets unsynchronized (for example because you edit the data in Klaviyo directly, you accidentally remove the API token), you can just click the the Sync all Affiliates button. This will send your entire roster of current affiliates back into Klaviyo.
Data Stored in Klaviyo
When Inflektion syncs an affiliate to Klaviyo, it passes valuable custom properties directly to their Klaviyo profile. You can view these on any synced user's profile under "Custom Properties".
The attributes sent by Inflektion include:
- inflektion_id (The affiliate's unique ID)
- inflektion_primarycode (Their unique coupon code)
- inflektion_primarydiscount (The discount value, e.g., "Get 25% Off")
- inflektion_primaryurl (Their personal tracking link)
- inflektion_status (e.g., "active" or "removed")
- inflektion_type (e.g., "Ambassador", "Influencer", "Affiliate")
Recommended Klaviyo Setup
While Inflektion syncs your affiliates to a specific Klaviyo List called "Inflektion Affiliates", we highly recommend creating and using a Klaviyo Segment for your actual email campaigns and affiliate flows.
Why use a Segment instead of a List? Since Klaviyo requires an email consent state to be tied directly to a List, our system is forced to use a List to initially add profiles and sync their subscription status. However, relying purely on this base List for your communications can occasionally lead to emailing the wrong profiles. For example, if an affiliate is removed, their profile will still existing in the List but with the status set to "removed".
Using a dynamically updating Segment bypasses this issue entirely and ensures you are only ever communicating with affiliates who are currently approved and active in your program.
How to set up your Active Affiliate Segment: To ensure your communications are perfectly targeted, create a new Segment in Klaviyo using the custom property we sync over. Set the definition to:
Properties about someone:
inflektion_statusequalsactive
By targeting this Segment instead of your base Affiliate List, you guarantee that any removed, rejected, or pending applicants are automatically excluded from your active affiliate campaigns and flows.
Creating a Dynamic Segment
You can use these custom properties to build dynamic segments in Klaviyo. For example, you can create a segment for your active Ambassadors to send them specific campaign updates.
- In Klaviyo, navigate to Audience > Lists & Segments.
- Click Create List / Segment and choose Segment.
- Name your segment (e.g., "Active Ambassador Affiliates").
- Set the conditions based on Properties about someone.
- Choose the custom property inflektion_status equals active.
- Click AND, then add another condition for Properties about someone.
- Choose the custom property inflektion_type equals Ambassador.
- Click Create Segment.
Klaviyo will now dynamically populate this segment with all affiliates matching those rules. You can use this segment to trigger automated onboarding flows, share new tracking links, or send exclusive promotional updates.
